How the Final Grade Formula Works

Your course grade is a weighted average of two parts: the grade you have already earned, and the final exam you haven't taken yet. If the final is worth W% of the course, everything before it is worth the other (100 − W)%. Writing your current grade as C, the exam score as F and your target as T:

T = C × (1 − W) + F × W

Solving for the exam score gives the formula this calculator runs:

F = (T − C × (1 − W)) ÷ W

Worked Example

Say your current grade is 88%, you want to finish with 90%, and the final is worth 25%. Then F = (90 − 88 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = (90 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 96%. Tough but possible. Now change just the target to 93%: F = (93 − 66) ÷ 0.25 = 108% — impossible, because even a perfect exam only gets you to 88 × 0.75 + 100 × 0.25 = 91%. Knowing which side of the line your target sits on is the whole point of working it out before you start revising.

How to Read the Scenario Table

Underneath the calculator you'll find your final course grade for exam scores from 0% to 100% in steps of 10. Two rows matter most: the row nearest your realistic exam score (your recent test average, honestly judged) is your most likely outcome, and the 100% row is your ceiling. If the ceiling is below your target, no amount of revision changes it — spend the effort where it can still move a grade, or talk to your instructor about extra credit early, not after the exam.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final exam?

Use this formula: needed score = (target grade − current grade × (1 − final weight)) ÷ final weight, with grades and weight as decimals or percentages used consistently. If your current grade is 85%, you want 90%, and the final is worth 30%, you need (90 − 85 × 0.70) ÷ 0.30 = (90 − 59.5) ÷ 0.30 = 101.7% — more than a perfect paper, so that target is out of reach and a lower one is worth aiming at.

What score do I need if my current grade is 92% and I want an A?

It depends on the final's weight. If an A is 90% and the final is worth 20%, you need (90 − 92 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = (90 − 73.6) ÷ 0.20 = 82% on the final — very manageable. At a 40% weight you would need (90 − 55.2) ÷ 0.40 = 87%. The calculator above answers it for your exact numbers.

What does it mean if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

It means the target grade is mathematically unreachable, even with a perfect final exam — your current grade and the remaining weight cannot add up to it. The useful move is to lower the target in the calculator until the needed score comes under 100%, and treat that grade as your real goal. Teachers sometimes offer extra credit that changes this picture; the calculator covers the standard grading maths only.

What if the calculator says I need a negative score, or 0%?

Good news: your target is already locked in. Even scoring 0 on the final, your course grade would stay at or above the target, because your current grade weighted by the non-final portion already clears it. That happens when your current grade is high and the final carries little weight.

How much can the final exam change my grade?

At most, the final's weight in percentage points. A final worth 20% can move your course grade by up to 20 points (from the score-0 outcome to the score-100 outcome) — realistically far less, since your exam score usually lands near your current grade. The scenario table above shows your course grade for every possible final score, so you can see the whole range at a glance.

Is the final grade calculated differently if the final replaces my lowest test?

Yes — some courses let the final replace a low earlier score, or weight categories (homework, quizzes, midterm) separately rather than using one 'current grade'. This calculator uses the standard two-part model: one current grade plus the final's weight. If your syllabus uses category weights, work out your current grade from those categories first, then use this page for the final.

How is this different from a GPA calculator?

This page works inside one course: it finds the exam score you need for a target percentage grade. A GPA calculator works across courses, converting finished letter grades into grade points on the 4.0 scale. Once this course is over and graded, feed the result into the GPA Calculator to see what it does to your overall GPA.

Is this final grade calculator free?

Yes. It is completely free with no signup required, and it runs entirely in your browser — the grades you enter are never uploaded or stored.
