GPA Calculator
Add your courses, credits, and grades to calculate your GPA on a 4.0 scale.
What Is a GPA Calculator?
A GPA calculator works out your Grade Point Average from the letter grades and credit values of your courses. Each letter grade is converted to a number of grade points on a 4.0 scale — for example, an A counts as 4.0 and a B counts as 3.0 on this tool. Those points are multiplied by the credits for each course, added together, and then divided by your total credits. This weighting means a grade in a high-credit course affects your overall average more than the same grade in a low-credit course.
Doing this maths by hand for a full semester is slow and easy to get wrong, especially when plus and minus grades such as B+ or A- are involved. A calculator removes that friction. You can enter finished results to see your current standing, or enter expected grades to estimate what your GPA could be before final results are published, which makes planning your next semester much clearer.
How to Use the GPA Calculator
- Use the four course rows provided, or click + Add Course to add more rows as needed.
- For each course, type a course name, enter its number of credits, and select your letter grade from the dropdown.
- Remove any row you do not need with the ✕ button on that row, then click Calculate GPA.
- Read your GPA in the result box, shown to two decimal places with the total credits it is based on.
Who Uses a GPA Calculator?
High school and university students are the main users, whether they are checking a semester result, working out what grades they need to reach a target average, or preparing an application that asks for a GPA. Parents helping a student review progress, tutors planning study priorities, and graduates converting a set of course results into a single figure for a form also find it useful. It is a planning and checking tool for anyone whose grades are reported course by course.
Tips for an Accurate GPA
- Enter the credit value exactly as it appears on your course list — entering the wrong credits is the most common reason a calculated GPA does not match an official transcript.
- Include every graded course for the period you are measuring, and leave out courses that are not graded or not counted toward your GPA at your institution.
- Remember that grading scales can differ between schools and countries, so compare this 4.0-scale result with your own institution's rules before relying on it for an application.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this GPA calculator free to use?
Yes. It is free with no signup required. Your courses and grades are worked out in your browser on this page and are not sent to or stored on a server.
How do credits affect my GPA?
Each course's grade points are multiplied by its credits before averaging. A grade in a course worth more credits therefore moves your overall GPA more than the same grade in a course worth fewer credits.
What grades does this calculator support?
The dropdown covers A+ through F, including plus and minus grades such as A-, B+, and C-. On this tool's 4.0 scale, both A+ and A count as 4.0, while an F counts as 0.0.
Can I calculate a GPA for just one semester?
Yes. Enter only the courses from that semester and calculate. To estimate a combined figure across semesters, enter all of the courses together with their correct credit values.
