Remove Line Breaks Online
Paste text with unwanted line breaks — get it back as clean, flowing text. The fix for mangled PDF and email pastes.
Why Line Breaks Sneak Into Copied Text
Line breaks are invisible instructions that say "start a new line here". Some are yours — the end of a paragraph, one item of a list. Most are accidents of copying: a PDF wraps every visual line into a real break, an email client hard-wraps at 70-odd characters, a web form exports one field per line. Paste that text into a document, a spreadsheet or another form and the breaks come with it, chopping sentences into fragments that look broken everywhere they land.
The Three Modes, and When Each Is Right
- Keep paragraphs — the PDF-and-email fix. Lines that were wrapped mid-paragraph are joined with spaces; real paragraph breaks (blank lines) survive as a single clean break. Prose stays prose.
- Replace with a space — everything becomes one flowing block. Right for text headed into a single-line field, a subtitle, a meta description, or anywhere a break would break the format.
- Remove completely — breaks vanish with nothing in their place. Right for data: joining fragments of a code, a key, a URL or a reference number that was split across lines. Words will fuse, which is exactly what data wants and prose hates.
Worked Example
Take this pasted fragment — a paragraph copied out of a PDF, split every line:
The committee decided on Tuesday to approve the budget for the coming year, after a long debate.
In keep paragraphs or replace with space mode it comes back as one sentence — "The committee decided on Tuesday to approve the budget for the coming year, after a long debate." — ready to quote, paste or publish. The counter under the result tells you how many breaks were removed, so a 300-line paste can be verified at a glance.
Cleaning up text further? The Remove Duplicate Lines tool drops repeated lines, the Case Converter fixes capitalisation, and the Word Counter tells you what the cleaned text weighs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I remove line breaks from text?
Paste your text into the box, choose how the breaks should be handled — replaced with a space, removed completely, or tidied paragraph by paragraph — and press the button. The cleaned text appears underneath with a count of how many breaks were removed. Copy it with the Copy button. Everything runs in your browser; your text is never uploaded.
What is the difference between 'replace with space' and 'remove completely'?
Replace with space joins lines the way they would read in a sentence: 'hello' and 'world' on separate lines become 'hello world'. Remove completely deletes the breaks without adding anything: 'hello' and 'world' become 'helloworld'. Removing completely is for data — lists, codes, keys — where the breaks themselves are the junk; replacing with a space is for prose, where the words must not fuse together.
Why does text copied from a PDF have so many line breaks?
A PDF stores text as positioned lines on a page, not as flowing paragraphs. When you copy from one, every visual line ending becomes a real line break, so a single paragraph arrives as ten short lines. The 'keep paragraphs' mode on this page is built for exactly that: it joins the wrapped lines into paragraphs with spaces, while the genuinely blank lines still mark where one paragraph ends and the next begins.
How do I remove line breaks in Microsoft Word instead?
In Word, open Find and Replace (Ctrl+H), search for ^p (Word's code for a paragraph break) and replace it with a space — or with nothing. Tick 'Use wildcards' off for this. That works inside one document; this page is quicker for text that is headed somewhere else — a form, a spreadsheet cell, an email, or a content system that mangles pasted line breaks.
Does this tool also remove extra spaces?
Yes, if the 'tidy spaces' box is ticked: runs of spaces and tabs collapse into a single space, and the join points are trimmed, so the result is clean in one pass. Untick it if your spacing is deliberate — for example fixed-width data where columns of spaces carry meaning — and only the line breaks themselves will change.
Can I keep paragraph breaks but remove single line breaks?
Yes — that is the 'keep paragraphs' mode. Single line breaks (the kind a PDF or an email wrap inserts mid-paragraph) become spaces, while blank lines are kept as one clean paragraph break. The result is flowing paragraphs instead of one wall of text or fifty fragments.
Is this remove line breaks tool free?
Yes. It is completely free with no signup required, and it runs entirely in your browser — the text you paste is never uploaded or stored.
