Remove Duplicate Lines

Remove duplicate lines from your text. Choose whether to keep the first or the last occurrence of each line.

What Is a Remove Duplicates Tool?

Lists accumulate duplicates silently: email lists merged from three sources, keyword lists from two tools, product SKUs pasted twice, survey responses, inventory exports. This tool cleans them in one paste: drop in your lines — one item per line — click the button, and every repeated line is removed, keeping the first occurrence and the original order of everything that remains. Copy the cleaned list straight back out.

Order preservation matters more than it sounds. Many deduplication methods (spreadsheets' included, historically) either sort the list or keep whichever copy the algorithm meets last. Keeping the first occurrence in its original position means a ranked list stays ranked, a playlist keeps its flow, and a step-by-step procedure keeps its sequence — the clean list is a strict subsequence of the messy one.

How to Use the Remove Duplicates Tool

  1. Paste your list into the box, one item per line.
  2. Click "Remove duplicate lines."
  3. The cleaned list replaces the text — review it, then use Copy to grab it, or Clear to start over.

What Counts as a Duplicate?

Matching is exact: a line is a duplicate only if it is character-for-character identical to an earlier line. That means "Apple" and "apple" are different lines (capitalization differs), and "item " with a trailing space differs from "item" without one. Exact matching is the safe, predictable default — it never merges things you might have meant to keep distinct, like product codes that differ only in case. If your list was assembled from messy sources, standardizing capitalization and trimming stray spaces before deduplicating will catch the near-duplicates too.

Common Jobs This Tool Speeds Up

  • Marketing lists: merging subscriber, customer, and lead exports before an import — most email platforms bill by contacts, so duplicates literally cost money.
  • SEO and data work: combining keyword lists, URL lists, and scraped results from multiple tools into one clean set.
  • Everyday cleanup: deduplicating grocery lists, invite lists, reading lists, and to-dos merged from several apps.

Is my list uploaded or saved anywhere?

No. The deduplication runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript — the text never leaves your device, which makes the tool safe for email lists, customer data, and other content you would not paste into a server-side service. Close or refresh the page and the text is gone.

How is this different from Excel's Remove Duplicates?

Functionally similar, practically faster for quick jobs: no file to open, no columns to select, no dialog to configure — paste, click, copy. Excel's feature works within a workbook and is better when your data has multiple columns and you need duplicates judged on combinations of fields. For a single list of lines, this tool's zero-setup flow wins.

My duplicates are still there after cleaning. Why?

Almost certainly because they are not truly identical: check for trailing spaces, different capitalization, or invisible differences from copying out of PDFs and web pages (such as non-breaking spaces). A quick find-and-replace to standardize the list, then re-running the tool, catches these. The exact-match rule is deliberate — it never deletes something that merely looks similar.

How large a list can I paste?

Thousands to tens of thousands of lines are handled comfortably — the algorithm checks each line against a set of lines already seen, which scales almost linearly. Extremely large datasets (hundreds of thousands of rows) belong in a spreadsheet or database, but for everyday list cleanup the practical limit is your clipboard, not this tool.
